The Norvite Simultaneous Pairs

The Norvite Simultaneous Pairs is run by the North District of the SBU on a Wednesday in mid January, although Clubs from all over Scotland participate.

The event is probably unique in that it is based on Aggregate scoring and is more like the Simultaneous tournaments we remember from days of yore, where hands were arranged to pose specific problems of bidding and play rather than the random distributions churned out by computers.

The hands are selected by the Convenor from International Teams Events,  which have produced significant swings, with lots of “Game tries” & Slam tries”( ie bid game or slam first, then try to make it.)

The tournament consists of 24 Boards, all selected for their Aggregate potential swings which seems to be extremely popular with the clubs that currently participate.

A tradition has developed that Board 13 is a particularly competitive board.

Entry fee is £2.50 per head and Cash prizes are awarded to the leaders with the Winners North/South & East West getting £40 and for the Selected Boards in each direction of £20 , with reducing awards for the places.

This year’s Norvite heat is scheduled Wednesday 19th January, 2011.

The ABU will run a heat on Saturday 15th January, 2011 at the ABC. Our results will not be published on-line until Wed. 19th.

NORVITE SIMULTANEOUS PAIRS

RULES

The competition will be one of 24 pre-set hands with Aggregate Scoring. Scores will be judged over the complete field and not at club level. Later a comprehensive list of results will be sent to Club Secretaries.

If there are 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 tables, then 24 boards will be sufficient

For 10 Tables, Boards 11 and 12 are placed as relays between Tables 5 & 6 and Boards 23 & 24 between Tables 10 & 1. East-West play again in their starting position then subtract their OWN number from 11 to find their table for the last round.

If there is any other number, then extra boards should be added for equal play, but these will not count in the competition. A movement for 7 tables playing 24 is available on request. For 11 tables, boards 23,24 & 25,26 are placed between Tables 11 & 1. East-West play again at their starting table and subtract their own number from 12 to find the table for the last round.

HALF TABLES ARE NOT ALLOWED AND THE MOVEMENT MUST BE A MITCHELL (So have a spare pair on standby)
